I am not the most qualified person to be writing this or the Nintendo fanatic of the group; that would be MrElmer (Sean). You don't know me, you probably don't trust my judgment on games enough to really listen to my opinions but those are what I have. I am going to give you my opinions and stats on the 3DS. What you do with them is your problem. Whether you decide wow he has done his research, which I have, or this guy needs to shut his pie hole is the question.
Now to start off I have not been into video games as long as some and probably longer than others. That said my first gaming system was the Gameboy Color. Yes. The Gameboy Color. Can you guess the game? Pokemon Red. In 1998 my parents decided I was "mature" enough, and I use the word loosely, to have a handheld. This one very simplistic game opened me up to a world and obsession that I will never forget. I remember writing my letter to Santa begging for this one thing and the excitement and joy of opening this great gift. Since then my systems have matured with me. Nintendo 64, Gameboy Advanced, Gameboy SP, Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, DS light, PSP (for about a week, not my favorite system...), Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and Xbox Slim. (I will not go into how much better the Slim is than the 360, I think Jacob is doing that.)

3D
In case you haven't heard the big deal about the 3DS is that it has technology that allows you to see a 3D image without having to wear those uncomfortable glasses. You are able to see into the screen like looking down into a box. This tech is great and will lead to wonderful things in the future but now it isn't perfect. If you move the screen too much in any direction the 3D picture fades away. With that said your not going to be playing with the DS two feet to you right but....

   "No more terrible glasses!!!"

Hand Held
So this small beast has two screens like the ones before. Top screen being glass and the bottom a touch screen. The size is around the same as the DS light but with a bigger top screen. An interesting new addition is the round analog stick called the "slide pad." There is also a slider on the side fo the system to change the intensity of the 3D incase your eyes start to hurt or you get a headache. Finally, it has two cameras on the outside of the device allowing you to take 3D photos!

Graphics
Now when this thing was announced I thought ohh no here is another PSP, great graphics, terrible games. Then immediately afterwards I thought wow this looks like Wii graphics. Why would Nintendo release a handheld that looks as good if not better than their main console? So I did some research and found out that this is old tech. They are using a graphics card from 2006 called PICA200, if you want to know more about it look it up. So an old graphics card in a new handheld? How is that going to be good you say? Well think about it. It will boost the power and graphics of the handheld while keeping costs low. This will take the 2D image we have all grown to love so much and make it much better. This sounds like a great business decision! Why don't we move on to games to show what that power has done and will do for this tiny titan.

Games
First we have the big name titles that need a paragraph of their own! I’m saying in advance sorry if your favorite is not mentioned in this paragraph. Starting off we have the rebirth of Kid Icarus in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Though I have never had the opportunity or wish to pick up the old Icarus games, I like the looks of this new one. Pit is modeled after his Super Smash character and I’m a bit sorry to say this, he has the sonic one-liners like “Bark like a dog,” and “Sorry to keep you waiting!” Though this is not bad it does bring down his character a little, at least to me. This game is going to try to blend air battles and ground battles into one fluid gameplay style so look forward to more info on this. Next up is Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, Nuff said.  Finally, lets end it with Resident Evil Revelations, just watch this trailer and see for yourself. Amazing.

From Nintendo: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time 3D, Nintendogs and Cats, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Paper Mario, PilotWings Resort, Starfox 64 3D, Steel Diver.  Now to me that is a great line up of games; from the wonderful Ocarina of time that I would play again even if it wasn’t in 3D, to Animal Crossing. Games for the core audience and games for the common player.

So lets get a bit more into this line up of games. Nintendo wasn’t the only developer making games for this platform, we have some games from Activision: DJ Hero 3D. EA: The Sims 3. Level 5: Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle. Namco Bandai Games: RIDGE RACER. Square Enix: Kingdom Hearts, and CODENAME: Chocobo Racing 3D. Tecmo Koei Games: Dead or Alive 3D, and Samurai Warriors 3D. Ubisoft: Battle of Giants Dinosaur Strike, Hollywood 61, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon. Capcom: Super Street Fighter IV 3D.

Now I’m not saying that these games are going to be great, I’m not even saying that some are going to be good, but with the original DS outselling the PS2 in 6 years of its life compared to PS2’s 10 years and claiming the title as the most successful video game console ever I would say Nintendo has something up their sleeves.  A few months back it was reported that Nintendos DS sales were down in Japan, which is really not saying much. The DS was still the number 1 seller. The 3DS might just be the boost the DS series needs to maintain its supremacy.

My Thoughts
I will not speak for everyone, since I don’t believe we all have the same opinion. I think this was a big step for Nintendo. This could either make or break them and seeing as the thing actually works as they say and it has such a great line up of games, I am going to say that this will be a must have item. Though I myself would have rather have seen an HD Wii this Christmas, I am very pleased with what I have seen of the 3DS so far. Hopefully this will make me want to play games on a handhelds more often and have me not just rely on it for long car trips or waits at the doctors office. I am primarily a console gamer; I like my big TV, my stereo system, and a cold glass of tea but who knows what the 3DS will bring. Look for a full review of this system shortly after it comes out at videogamehenchmen.com and if you made it this far thanks for reading. Please place any comments or questions below and feel free to tell us how we could improve the site. Thanks.

  2. I think the sales for the 3DS will be outstanding considering everybody's Grandma has a Nintendo DS rather than a PSP.

  4. Nice outlook towards the 3DS. I wonder how much it will be...

  5. What's up with all this 3D crap. They need to focus more on improving the quality of the graphics rather than making it come out at you. What's the point? Good graphics coming out at you is good but Shitty graphics coming at you is just...shitty.

  7. Well the DS and past nintendo handhelds have been little more than ways to play Mario and (I may get tons of shit for this) Pokemon, so I'm ecstatic to see some good re-makes like Ocarina of Time coming out for it. Graphics wise looking at prereleased pictures of Pokemon Black and White I think they look pretty good but pokemon is a rather non graphic intensive games so it will be interesting to see how the graphics work for other games.

  9. Sorry my mistake, the new pokemon aren't coming out on the 3DS so only time will tell what the 3DS will be able to put out graphics wise.

  • COD: Multiplayer Trailer

I'll admit, I haven't been too excited for Call of Duty: Black Ops. The only thing that has really interested me so far has been the single player, because the Call of Duty campaigns have always been great at delivering an action-packed, intense single player experience. Check it out!
